Dr. Ilana Lewis (she/her)
Naturopathic Doctor
I am a Licensed Naturopathic Doctor in California, practicing in my hometown of Los Angeles.
My journey to naturopathic medicine has been profoundly shaped by my own health challenges, which ultimately led me to become a compassionate and thorough practitioner. Initially, I was on the path to becoming an MD, and I earned my Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from UCLA. However, my 20s were marked by persistent, complex health issues that conventional medicine couldn’t explain. Despite my proactive approach and consultations with numerous specialists, I was often told that “nothing was wrong.” Over time, this experience began to feel isolating and disheartening.
My perspective shifted when I found a holistic practitioner who truly listened, validated my experience, and approached my case with empathy.
This encounter transformed my health and inspired me to pursue naturopathic medicine, with its focus on root-cause healing. I went on to attend the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where I earned my Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine.
Throughout my training, I developed a focus on functional gastrointestinal disorders and complex chronic conditions, including mold toxicity, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), Lyme disease, and chronic infections. I also expanded my skills with advanced modalities such as IV nutrient infusions, visceral manipulation, neural injection therapy, and applied kinesiology.
In my practice, I am dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive environment where patients feel genuinely heard and empowered. I tailor each treatment plan to the unique needs of each patient, working closely with them to ensure they are active participants in their healing journey. My approach centers on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of illness, giving patients the knowledge and tools they need to reclaim their health and live fully.
I am a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), the California Naturopathic Doctors Association (CNDA), and the Gastroenterology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (GastroANP). As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I am passionate about creating an inclusive and affirming space where queer patients feel supported in their care.
FAQs

Naturopathic medicine is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on treating the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are trained to understand each patient as a unique individual, taking into account lifestyle, environment, genetics, and mental well-being to develop a comprehensive, personalized plan for optimal health. Unlike conventional medicine, which often centers on alleviating symptoms through medication, naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention and long-term wellness. NDs utilize a variety of natural and conventional therapies to stimulate the body’s inherent healing processes, aiming to empower patients to take an active role in their own health journey.

As a licensed naturopathic doctor in California, I am fully qualified to perform physical exams, order lab work and diagnostic imaging, diagnose health conditions, prescribe medications and develop treatment plans—just as you would expect from other doctors. My licensure also sets me apart from traditional naturopaths or other “natural medicine” providers who may not have the same level of training or credentials. While traditional naturopaths may be well-intentioned, they often complete minimal instruction from non-accredited programs and lack the rigorous medical education and clinical experience necessary for diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.

In California, insurance companies are not required to cover naturopathic medical care (although states like Washington and Oregon do mandate insurance coverage for licensed NDs). For patients with private insurance (PPO), I can provide documentation of services for you to submit to your insurer for potential reimbursement. However, for Medicare patients, naturopathic services are not reimbursable at this time. Both state and national naturopathic associations are working to expand insurance coverage for naturopathic care, with the goal of making these services accessible to all who seek them.
